Dye... On Heritage Club
(The following excerpts are taken from an interview with P.B. Dye in Spring 1996 as he worked on the completion of the course)

Q. What is the most important component to your design success?
A.  Without question it is the founders for they have a vision of what they wanted for Heritage Club. Their unwavering commitment to building a world class golf club is the backbone behind Heritage Club. The finest topography or soil in the world can result in a mediocre golf course if the founders don't have a vision and a commitment to that vision.

Q. How do you go about designing a golf course?
A.  Well I can tell you one thing I don't use... and that is a computer. In fact, to tell you the truth, I don't even know how to turn on a computer. I feel that you have to design the course on the property itself. I lay out the tee and green positions from a routing plan; however, the rest of the creative design work is done in my head, in my heart and in the field.

Q. Is it true that you can work all of the heavy equipment and that you personally shape each green?
A.  I realize that driving a dozer may not be in keeping with everyone's idea of a golf course designer, but for me, it is the best way I know to get results I am looking for. Heck, I was brought up operating golf course construction equipment.

Q. Obviously, your work will be compared to your father's. How do you feel about that?
A.  Honored. I am very proud of my father's work. Growing up I worked with him on many of his projects. I learned a great deal from him as well as other great architects. I, like most course architects, am flattered to be compared to Pete Dye.

Q. How do you rate Heritage Club?
A.  I am very proud of what we have created at Heritage Club. I was blessed with a spectacular piece of land and I feel that we have realized the vision of providing the Cincinnati area with a world class golf club.  However, what really matters is what the members think of Heritage Club. Those I have had a pleasure of talking to certainly are excited by what they have seen.

Q. How would you describe to someone what makes Heritage Club so special?
A.  First and foremost is the amount and quality of the land. I can tell you only founders that truly love golf would give me 207 acres upon which to create. This opens up so many options to the architect.  Secondly, you have to look at the uniqueness of this design in the marketplace. The Cincinnatian's who have toured this course are amazed and excited that this course is here in their backyard. Nine lakes, several creeks, a few railroad ties, it is hard to me to describe exactly what makes Heritage Club so special... I am afraid that they are just going to have to come and see for themselves...
